Visual Learning: Transforming the Liberal Arts
This blog started as a place to post visual material related to a conference recently held at Carleton College on the topic of visual learning. Now that the conference is over, we'd love to continue the conversation we started at Carleton with colleagues from colleges around the United States. My hope is to solicit interest from those who are curious about and/or invested in the field of visual learning (even if you aren't affiliated with a liberal arts college). How can we continue this type of visual work and collaboration into the future?

Catching up!
I am finally trawling through my notes from the Visual Learning Conference and promise to share the most interesting excerpts here.
TO START, we had a fabulous keynote speaker, Scott McCloud. Chris Francese, Professor of Classical Languages at Dickinson College, wrote this blog post reflecting on Scott’s address: “Comics and Visual Communication: Scott McCloud at Carleton Viz Conference.” A current Carleton student, Jon Kittaka, also shared his enthusiasm for Scott in his blog post: Powerpoint Power and Parading Chimeras.ALSO, some links suggested by Scott:

Thank you to Keith Braafladt and Margaret Pezalla-Granlund for a great finale in the media lab! Here’s the fabulous output of their workshop, Designing with Blocks.

We had the opportunity to flip through several of the books from the Veterans Book Project in this morning’s session. The exhibition featuring these books represents such an unusual and fantastic use of the gallery—or transformation of the gallery—into a reading room of sorts. Laws of PowerPoint
In this session now. Thanks, Doug Foxgrover, for these tips!
- Text must be readable—and not much of it
- Show what you want others to see
- Time your visuals to complement your talk
